Phoenix Theatre is our Associate young company for female, trans and non-binary young people aged 13-19. The group have previously made shows celebrating the history of the women’s rights movement, a play ‘Pronoun’ about complexities of being a transgender teen, and this year a supernatural drama about young people choosing their futures- ‘Teen Spirit’. Telling stories exploring the experiences of women, trans and non-binary people. They run the company themselves from designing posters to stage managing and co-directing. The group is not only for young performers but for those who aspire to work backstage. They work alongside two professional directors Evie Osbon and Octavia Nyombi.
“Phoenix offers acceptance; something that can be difficult to find in other drama groups. As someone who has struggled with my sexuality and body image my whole life; many drama groups have increased this issues and honestly made me feel worse about myself for trying to pursue something I really enjoy. It's never been like that at Phoenix. From the moment I first walked through the doors; I have been completely accepted; not told to change or do something differently or be someone I'm not. It has been a really important place not just for my drama skills but my mental health”
